The 21st George Old Car Show 2017

The George Old Car Show of 2017

The 21st George Old Car Show was held on 11 & 12 February 2017, and hosted by the Southern Cape Old Car Club, organised by Phillip Rosser and his team. The 2017 show featured a large variety of cars from old to new, stationary engines, tractors and motorcycles.  There were some very rare old cars falling into the Class A – Ancestor vehicles (as defined by the Southern African Veteran and Vintage Association being manufactured before the end of 1904). A 1901 Benz, 1902 Peugeot and a 1904 De Dion Bouton Model Y 6hp was also on the show, and most ardent to see these cars driving around.

There were also a lot of beautiful Tin Lizzies at the show, dating from 1911 to 1926. One very exciting Model T project that was on display and driving, draw a lot of attention. The 2017 President of the Model T club of South Africa (Hugh Clair-Tailbot) was also at the show with his 1915 Model T Speedster. There were some interesting stories told by the Model T guys present at the show that came from far and wide all over South Africa, thanks for the commitment.

Also as part of the George show a veteran tour was held on the 10th February that was arranged by Philip Kuschke. The tour took place from Uniondale to George via the Prince Albert pass, and covered a total distance of 145km, with a 40km dirt road and continued via the De Vlugt to Herold then George. This was an exiting challenge for all the veteran cars with numerous breakdowns from people struggling to read directions to tyre punctures and engine failure, and with great team effort and a vast amount of knowledge in the group most of the problems were sorted out quickly. At the end of the day all the cars made it to George for the Show, and that’s what counted.

Hope to see you all at the 2018 George Old Car Show, let’s try and increase the number of Model T’s present on the veteran tours and the car shows all over South Africa. What a lovely event, thanks to all the Model T’s that made it to the show. LONG LIVE THE MODEL T !!!
